- These eels are very difficult to sex visually and captive breedings have not been reported.
[edit] Tank compatibility
- These eels will pose a threat to any invertebrates such as shrimp, snails and crabs, but are fine to keep with corals, anemones and sea urchins. They should not be kept with very small fish such as Damselfish, but larger semi-aggressive and aggressive fish should be ok provided the tank is large enough.

- These eels are carnivorous and will gladly take ghost shrimp, krill, squid, and silversides.

- Feed once or twice a day.

- Provide a matured environment, it must be spacious with plenty of hiding places. A secure lid is a must as this fish is a true escape artist.

- A nocturnal ambush predator, will spend most of the day hidden amongst live rock.
[edit] Identification
- A striking and popular eel, typical elongate in shape with a large head and mouth. It's nose is yellow/white while the rest of the body is broken up in thick brown and white/yellow bands, these are not defined, rather having broken edges and spots. The patterns will vary from fish to fish.
