Sexing[edit]

Females are smaller than males and when in breeding condition will have a rounder belly.

Tank compatibility[edit]

A generally peaceful small Cichlid that should work well with other peaceful community fish such as Neon Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras. They should be kept in male/female pairs, however, if a pair seems to not be getting on they should be separated.

Diet[edit]

Should accept most small meaty foods including Cichlid pellets and brine shrimp.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Provide this fish with a spacious mature tank with plenty of caves and hiding places. If intending to breed the pair they will need flat stones to lay eggs on. They do not appreciate bright lighting or light substrate, keep substrate dark with pebbles.

Behaviour[edit]

A peaceful small Cichlid that forms strong monogamous bonds and later nuclear families. Can become territorial when spawning.

Identification[edit]

An oval-shaped Cichlid. The body is yellow-brown with five faint, black bars that extend from the back to the mid-section. The body has rows of iridescent spots which range in colour from blue to green to purple, lighter around the mid-section and darker around the head and caudal fin. The caudal fin is fan-shaped and the upper tip is red, below the red tip is a turquoise stripe. The dorsal fin has a red edge with a yellow line paralleling it.
