Macroalgae is a term used to describe large forms of algae. Typically seaweed, chaeto, mangroves, sea-grapes, calerpa etc. Macroalgae is useful in the removal of nitrates in a marine aquarium. By placing it in a refugium and harvesting it when it out grows its space nitrates are exported from the environment.
