This little tetra has a pale iridescent body with a bold red line from the gill plate to the caudal peduncle, it is underlined with a thinner white band and black band. The eye is also half red. The fins are generally colourless with a hint of yellow.
Can be mistaken for Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus, however H.amapaensis's black band under the red lateral band is much thinner than H.heterorhabdus.
